After successful 2015, 2016, and 2018 events in DC, Writing Day Workshops is excited to announce The 2019 Chesapeake Writing Workshop — a full-day “How to Get Published” writing event in Arlington, VA (suburb of Washington, DC) on July 13, 2019.
This writing event is a wonderful opportunity to get intense instruction over the course of one day, pitch a literary agent or editor (optional), get your questions answered, and more. Note that there are limited seats at the event (200 total). All questions about the event regarding schedule, details and registration are answered below. WHAT IS IT?
This is a special one-day “How to Get Published” writing workshop on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Arlington. In other words, it’s one day full of classes and advice designed to give you the best instruction concerning how to get your writing & books published. We’ll discuss your publishing opportunities today, how to write queries & pitches, how to market yourself and your books, what makes an agent/editor stop reading your manuscript, and more. No matter what you’re writing — fiction or nonfiction — the day’s classes will help point you in the right direction. Writers of all genres are welcome.
This event is designed to squeeze as much into one day of learning as possible. You can ask any questions you like during the classes, and get your specific concerns addressed. We will have literary agents onsite to give feedback and take pitches from writers, as well. This year’s agent & editor faculty so far includes:

By the end of the day, you will have all the tools you need to move forward on your writing journey. This independent event is organized by coordinator Kerrie Flanagan of Writing Day Workshops, with assistance from the local writing group Chesapeake Bay Writers.

BLOCK ONE: 9:30 – 10:30
1. An Overview of Your Publishing Options Today (Salon J-K). This workshop examines the two largest routes any writer can take with their book: traditional publishing and self-publishing / e-publishing.
2. How to Write Awesome Young Adult and Middle Grade (Salon H). Young adult and middle grade are hot markets today, but what does it really mean to write them? And how do you write YA and MG stories that connect with readers and keep them glued to the page?
3. How to Write a Memoir Readers Will Love (Salon F-G). Memoir is a powerful form of writing that can create a deep connection for the reader and deep healing for the author. However, owning your story and putting it on the page can be a challenging prospect, both technically and emotionally.
1. How to Compose a Great Beginning for a Great Mystery/Thriller/Suspense Novel (Or Any Novel, for That Matter) (Salon H). This workshop focuses on killer openings & spine-tingling suspense.
2. Everything You Need to Know About Agents and Query Letters (Salon J-K). This workshop is a thorough crash course in dealing with literary agents.
3. Diverse fiction and #OwnVoices (Salon F-G). What is diverse fiction and how can an author, any author, utilize it to sell their work?

BLOCK THREE: 1:15 – 2:30
1. “Writers Got Talent”—a Page 1 Critique Fest (Salon J-K). This is a chance to get your first page read (anonymously — no bylines given) with attending agents commenting on what was liked or not liked about the submission.
2. How to Sell a Nonfiction Book (Salon F-G). This session is completely devoted to nonfiction book proposals.
3. Be Brief, Bright, and BOLD! How to Create Epic Picture Books That Sell (Salon H). In this workshop, you will learn how to create, pitch, and publish compelling picture books that will delight audiences for years to come.
BLOCK FOUR: 2:45 – 3:45
1. How to Market Yourself and Your Books: Talking Author Social Media, Blogging, and Platform (Salon H). Whether you’re traditionally published or self-published, everyone could use some helpful guidance on how to effectively market themselves and sell more books.
2. Querypalooza (Salon J-K). In this interactive workshop, you will learn query letter Dos and Don’ts, how to write a compelling logline, synopsis, and bio, and put all the pieces together to create a concise and killer query that will leave agents and editors salivating to read your entire manuscript. Bring your query in case the instructor has time to do live critiques.
3. Mastering Point-of-view in Fiction (Salon F-G). In this class, we’ll define each type of point-of-view, look at examples, explore the pluses and drawbacks of each.

BLOCK FIVE: 4:00 – 5:00
1. Ten Keys to Writing Success (Salon J-K). Learn 10 things you can be doing right now that will help get your book(s) published and have more control over your writing destiny.
2. How to Write and Sell Romance in Today’s Market (Salon F-G). Join USA Today best-selling romance author Charis Michaels for an overview of the current romance-fiction market.
3. Character-Centered Worldbuilding in Science Fiction and Fantasy (Salon H). In this presentation, In this presentation, a literary agent will share his approach to crafting fantasy worlds rooted in character conflict, demonstrating an approach to let exposition flow naturally while that the same time raising the emotional stakes of the story.

At 5 p.m., the day is done. Speakers will make themselves available by the workshop’s bookstore for a short while to sign any books for attendees.

Emily Williamson is a literary agent and the founder of Williamson Literary. In adult fiction she is looking for lyrical prose, stories with unique settings, adventure, international, fantasy/sci-fi or science inspired, magical realism. For children’s, she seeks stories that talk up to kids, that inspire and build confidence with cleverness and humor. Prefers middle grade over YA; no picture books. Nonfiction interests: history, sports, science, environmental, narrative, and a solid author platform. Gwen Hawkes is an editor with St. Martin’s Press and St. Martin’s Essentials. She is seeking: “I’m looking to acquire adult fiction, particularly book club fiction, historical/period fiction, and women’s fiction. I have particular soft spot for magical realism (even occasionally tiptoeing into fantasy). I read for both strong characters and propulsive plotlines. Best of all, I like books and characters that are brave enough to tangle with big ideas. I’m also in search of narrative nonfiction that reveals stories and places every bit as engaging as fiction. Untold histories, environmental and nature writing, and memoir are all favorites. Within SMP Essentials, I’m looking for body, mind, spirit titles that are geared to a younger, millennial audience—how to build a life (relationally, financially, spiritually, vocationally, etc.) that you love. Vicki Selvaggio is a literary agent with Storm Literary (formerly with Jennifer De Chiara Literary). She is currently looking for lyrical picture books, middle grade and young adult fiction, new adult, mysteries, suspense, thrillers, paranormal, fantasy, narrative nonfiction, and adult fiction. Vicki is especially drawn to middle grade and young adult. “I especially love thrillers and all elements of weird, creepy stuff. If it’s out of the box, and it will make me think and think, long after I’m done reading, send it to me! Bibi Lewis is a literary agent with The Ethan Ellenberg Literary Agency. She is seeking: “I am currently looking for young adult, middle grade, and picture books — as well as commercial and upmarket fiction. In all genres I am looking for contemporary realism, fantasy, mysteries, historicals and lots of humor. I have a soft spot for heists and sleuths (and would especially love to see a new YA Harriet the Spy or Veronica Mars!) as well as twisty thrillers. On the adult side, I am looking for anything smart, sharp and witty — but specifically for romance, women’s fiction, mysteries and thrillers. Well-developed characters are a must. He seeks graphic novel projects for all age groups. In nonfiction, he has wide interests as long as your platform is excellent. Laura Strachan is a literary agent and founder of Strachan Literary Agency. Fiction interests: Primarily literary fiction and upmarket commercial. In general, the agency seeks no genre fiction; however, Laura will consider fiction with crossover potential if beautifully written. Nonfiction interests: Narrative nonfiction, including memoirs and travel writing. Will consider other nonfiction projects if quirky or interesting. These one-on-one meetings are an amazing chance to pitch your book face-to-face with an agent, and get personal, individual feedback on your pitch/concept. If the agent likes your pitch, they’ll request to see part/all of your book — sending you straight past the slush pile. It also gives you an intimate chance to meet with an agent and pick their brain with any questions on your mind.

Add $29 — to secure a 10-minute one-on-one meeting with any of our literary agents or editors in attendance. If they wish, attendees are free to sign up for multiple 10-minute pitch sessions at $29/session — pitching multiple individuals, or securing 20 minutes to pitch one person rather than the usual 10. Add $69 — for an in-depth, personal critique of your one-page query letter from Chuck Sambuchino, one of the workshop’s former instructors. (This rate is a special event value for Chesapeake Writing Workshop attendees only.) Registrants are encouraged to take advantage of the specially-priced critique, so they can send out their query letter with confidence following the workshop. Also, if you are meeting with an agent at the event, you’re essentially speaking your query letter aloud to them. Wouldn’t it be wise to give that query letter (i.e., your pitch) one great edit before that meeting?
Add $89 — for an in-depth personal critique of the first 10 double-spaced pages of your novel. Spaces with faculty for these critiques are very limited, and participating attendees get an in-person meeting at the workshop. Options:
- Memoir, narrative nonfiction, essays: Faculty member Lisa Jakub, a published author, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your work, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.
- Young adult and middle grade: Faculty member Christina June, a published author, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your work, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.
- Children’s picture books, romance, literary fiction, mainstream fiction, historical fiction: Faculty member Eve Porinchak, a former literary agent and current writing coach, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your book, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss her thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting. If you are getting a picture book critique, please submit 1,000 words maximum, and your submission can come with or without illustrations.
- Mystery, thriller, crime, suspense: Faculty member Art Taylor, a published author, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your work, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.
- Fantasy, science fiction, multicultural fiction, LGBTQ fiction, literary fiction (any of these categories can be adult, young adult or middle grade): Faculty member Moe Shalabi, a former literary agent, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your work, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.
- Romance, women’s fiction: Faculty member Charis Michaels, a published author, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your work, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.
- Mainstream fiction, literary fiction, romance, women’s fiction: Faculty member Anne Clermont, a published author, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your work, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.

Because of limited space at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Arlington, the workshop can only allow 200 registrants, unless spacing issues change. For this reason, we encourage you to book sooner rather than later.

Refunds: If you sign up for the event and have to cancel for any reason at any time, you will receive 50% of your total payment back [sent by check or PayPal]. The other 50% is nonrefundable and will not be returned, and helps the workshop ensure that only those truly interested in the limited spacing sign up for the event. (Please note that query editing payments and manuscript editing payments are completely non-refundable if the instructor has already edited your work.)
